SHSAT Scoring, Percentiles & Score Conversion (Interactive Guide)

2025 SHSAT Cutoff Scores : By Schools With trends

Set a smart target by understanding the mechanics behind the number. inside: percentile shifts, s-curve scaling, raw → scaled → composite conversion, target bands, and how families should read the DOE report

Percentiles : (Where does a score sit )

Percentiles shift each year. As a reference point, recent distribution data (for a prior cycle) showed median ≈ 388 with the middle 50% around 333 -462. Treat these as context, not targets your goal is to exceed the lowest qualifying score for the schools you rank highest.

Non-linear scaling (why “one more raw” can matter a lot)

  • The raw→scaled curve is typically S-shaped.

  • Mid-range: gains feel steady (+1 raw ≈ +3-4 scaled).

  • Edges: the curve steepens-one problem can push you past a school’s cutoff.

  • Practical takeaway: once students approach their target band, prioritize accuracy on your “almost there” items (careless mistakes, one-step algebra, quick ELA inference) because those are the cheapest raw points to capture.

Score conversion & building your estimator

Because scaling is re-done each year and is non-linear, there’s no official fixed raw→scaled table. For practice planning:

  • Track raw correct in ELA and Math on each full-length test.

  • Use a calculator/estimator calibrated to typical SHSAT curves to convert raw → estimated scaled → composite.

  • Watch for plateaus around the mid-range (small raw gains can yield larger scaled jumps there) and steeper edges near the top/bottom of the scale.

  • Ultimately, composite score and preference order determine your offer-optimize both.

What Score should I aim for?

  • Top-selective (e.g., Stuy, SITHS, HSMSE): target well above the posted lowest qualifying number to buffer year-to-year swings.

  • Highly selective (e.g., Bronx Science, QHSS, Brooklyn Tech): aim comfortably above the latest cutoff.

  • Selective (e.g., HSAS, Brooklyn Latin): treat the latest cutoff as a minimum, not a goal—build cushion.

How scoring works (raw → scaled → composite)

1) Raw score (per section)
One point per correct answer; unanswered/incorrect don’t subtract. Time: 180 minutes for the whole test.

2) Field-test items exist
Each section has unmarked field-test questions that don’t count-answer everything.

3) Scaled scores (per section)

DOE “equates” each section’s raw score to a scaled score so forms/years are comparable. The conversion changes every year and isn’t published ahead of time. In the middle of the scale, +1 raw ≈ +3-4 scaled; at the extremes, +1 raw can be +10-20 scaled.

4) Composite (what admissions use)

Composite = ELA scaled + Math scaled. Students are sorted from highest to lowest composite; the algorithm walks down the list and gives each student their highest-ranked school with seats left.

How to read the DOE score report (families)

  • ELA Scaled and Math Scaled appear separately.

  • Composite is the sum; this is what admissions use. There’s no section minimum published strong performance in either section helps because composite rules.

  • Offer result shows the single highest-ranked school on your list where your composite met the cutoff while seats remained. If you’re close but short, ask your school counselor about Discovery Program pathways.

FAQ's - SHSAT Timing & Exam Length

Is the SHSAT out of 700 or 800?

DOE does not publish a fixed max; in practice, section maxima are usually in the mid-300s, so composites cluster in the high-600s (≈700) rather than a flat 800. What matters is where your composite sits relative to school cutoffs in that year.
