Which AP Exams include the built-in Desmos calculator and which handhelds are allowed in 2026-plus what to bring, what’s banned, and quick exam-day tips.
What changed for 2026 (quick version)
Desmos is built into Bluebook for select AP Exams. You’ll see graphing, scientific, or four-function Desmos options depending on the exam.
AP Statistics now includes Desmos graphing inside Bluebook for 2026.
AP Calculus AB/BC & AP Precalculus: Desmos appears only in the calculator-allowed parts—there are still no-calculator sections you must complete without any calculator.
You can bring up to two permitted handhelds in addition to using Bluebook’s built-in Desmos. Memory clearing isn’t required.
Proctors check devices and calculators can’t be shared.
(These points summarize the official College Board updates and language for the 2025-26 year.)
Ap calculator policy: What’s allowed vs. not allowed
Approved options (high level)
Built-in Desmos inside the Bluebook testing app (availability varies by subject).
Approved handheld graphing calculators for exams that allow/require them.
Scientific (non graphing) calculators when the subject permits and the model doesn’t include disallowed features.
Bring familiar calculators in good working order (fresh batteries); you may bring up to two.
Not allowed (common pitfalls)
Phones, smartwatches, wearables
Tablets, laptops, PDAs, or devices with QWERTY keyboards (e.g., TI-92 Plus, Voyage 200)
Models with wireless/Bluetooth/cellular, internet access, audio/video, paper tape, stylus input (e.g., certain Class Pad models), or that require an outlet or make noise
Peripherals attached to an otherwise-approved calculator (stylus, external keyboard, wireless adapter)
Tip: Only the Bluebook-embedded Desmos is permitted during AP Exams—web or app versions of Desmos are not allowed in the exam room.
Where Desmos appears (by exam type)
Math (Calculus AB/BC, Precalculus): Desmos is available only in the calculator sections. You must do no-calculator parts without any calculator.
Statistics: Built-in Desmos graphing is available for 2026 within Bluebook.
Select sciences: Availability varies; schools should confirm subject-specific guidance as posted for the current year.
Other AP Exams: If a subject isn’t listed by College Board as allowing calculators, no calculators are permitted (exceptions require SSD approval).
Handheld check: bring the right model
If your exam allows/needs a graphing calculator, verify your model against the approved list (updated by College Board each year).
You do not need to clear memory before or after the exam.
Infrared-capable calculators can be used, but keep them separated so they cannot exchange data.
Large/tilted displays are permitted; proctors may seat you at the back so other students can’t see your screen.
Exam-day rules most students forget
No sharing calculators and no communication between calculators.
Don’t use calculator memory to store or remove test content; scores are canceled for violations.
If you don’t want to use a calculator (or one isn’t available), you may still test—calculators are optional unless a section requires one.
Expect a visual inspection of handhelds before testing; have batteries or a spare ready.
What to bring (fast checklist)
Your testing device with Bluebook installed and updated (school-managed devices must be signed in and ready).
Two permitted handheld calculators (if your exam allows), spare batteries, and a simple analog watch (no alarms).
Photo ID, pencils/pens, approved reference tools only when the specific exam permits.
